Prison Ministry India and Fr. Muller Hospital Conduct Health Camp at District Prison
Mangaluru, Aug 20, 2025: Prison Ministry India (PMI), Mangalore Unit, in collaboration with Father Muller Medical College Hospital, organized a special medical camp with a focus on dermatological (skin) check-ups at the District Prison on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. The camp was inaugurated by the Jail Superintendent Mr. Sharanabasappa, who emphasized the true purpose of prisons. “A jail is not a place of punishment but of reformation. Here, we neither punish nor judge - that is the role of the court. Those who are here have made mistakes or shown behavior unacceptable to society, and this is a space where they are given a chance to reform,” he said in his address. Highlighting the importance of health and skill development among inmates, he added, “Regular health check-up camps like this will help inmates remain physically fit. Alongside, skill development programs are essential to keep them meaningfully engaged. These skills will not only enrich their time here but also prepare them for a renewed life once they return to their families and society.” He appreciated the consistent efforts of Prison Ministry India both inside and outside the prison walls and assured greater opportunities for PMI to serve inmates in transformative ways. On behalf of PMI, Rev. Fr. Stifan Perera, OCD, Spiritual Director of PMI Mangalore, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the jail authorities for their wholehearted cooperation in every initiative. He stressed PMI’s mission of extending care with compassion: “Our hope is to reach out to inmates and authorities in a deeply humanitarian way, affirming dignity and fostering hope.” Representing the medical team, Dr. Rahul from Fr. Muller’s highlighted the importance of skin health. “The skin is the largest organ of the body, and it is highly prone to various illnesses if neglected. Proper skin care is vital not only for physical health but also for mental well-being,” he explained. The event was compered by Sr. Flora Machado, while Sr. Lidwin Sequeira delivered the vote of thanks. The program was coordinated by Mr. Denis Coutinho (Coordinator), along with Ms. Linet Castelino (Secretary), Mr. Lawrence Crasta (Assistant Coordinator), and other dedicated members of PMI. The medical camp saw enthusiastic participation from the inmates, who welcomed the opportunity for free medical consultation and check-ups. The initiative reflected PMI’s ongoing commitment to combining health, dignity, and reformation in its outreach to prisons.

Prison Ministry India Mangaluru Unit Marks Annual Day at Infant Jesus Shrine
Mangaluru, Aug 14, 2025: “We are called to be people of hope, lighting a candle wherever there is darkness,” urged Rt. Rev. Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore, while addressing the gathering at the Annual Day celebration of the Mangaluru Unit of Prison Ministry India (PMI). The programme, held at the Infant Jesus Shrine, Bikarnakatte, on August 14, coincided with the Feast of St. Maximilian Kolbe, patron saint of PMI, who gave his life at Auschwitz in place of another prisoner, embodying the true spirit of Christian hope. The celebration began with a solemn Eucharistic Mass presided over by Bishop Saldanha. In his homily, the Bishop recalled the sacrifice of St. Kolbe, who became a beacon of hope amid inhuman suffering, and encouraged the faithful to embrace perseverance and courage: “If you know the why, you can bear any how. That which does not kill you makes you stronger.” The formal programme that followed featured a welcome address by Mr. Donald Cutinha, Coordinator of PMI Mangaluru Unit, and the annual report presented by Ms. Linet Castelino, Secretary. Mr. Jerome Lobo, former Coordinator, proposed the vote of thanks, while Rev. Sr. Preethi Sharon compered the event. Lucy Pais, Treasurer, and Mr. Lawrence Crasta, Assistant Coordinator, were also present. A special moment of the evening was the felicitation of Mrs. Hilda Lobo and Mr. David Fernandes, who have served the unit with dedication for over 23 years. Their long-standing commitment was deeply appreciated by both the unit and the gathering. In recognition of the humanitarian services carried out by PMI, the programme was attended by DYSP Subash, Police Constable Bharat, and District Jail Counsellor Denis D’Souza. Established 26 years ago under the spiritual guidance of the Carmelite Fathers of the Infant Jesus Shrine, the PMI Mangaluru Unit is a voluntary body of religious sisters and lay faithful. Members visit prisoners weekly, listen to their struggles, extend legal aid, and support their families. They provide scholarships to children of inmates, assist with hospital care, and conduct health camps. The unit also runs rehabilitation efforts by training inmates to make paper carry bags and hair bands, and helps them find jobs after release. Fr. Stifan Pereira, Spiritual Director, and Rev. Fr. Melvin D’Cunha, Superior of St. Joseph’s Monastery, were present at the event. The day’s celebration highlighted PMI’s mission: to uphold the dignity of every human person and bring hope where it is most needed.

World Record Holder Hoists Tricolour at Infant Jesus Shrine on Independence Day
Mangaluru, Aug 15, 2025 - “I initially had plans to give up, but I reminded myself that no gain comes without pain. Our freedom fighters must have faced countless moments of despair and discouragement. Yet, with the vision of a free India in their hearts, they pressed on. Because of their sacrifice, we today breathe the air of freedom.” These heartfelt words from Ms. Remona Evette Pereira, the “Gold Girl” of Mangaluru, set the tone for the 79th Independence Day celebrations at the Infant Jesus Shrine, Bikarnakatte. This year’s event carried a special distinction as the world record holder was invited as chief guest to hoist the Tricolour in the presence of clergy, devotees, and well-wishers. The solemn flag hoisting was followed by the singing of the National Anthem, filling the shrine premises with patriotic fervour. Ms. Pereira, who achieved a 170-hour Bharatanatyam marathon recognised by the Golden Book of World Records, England, dedicated her record to the nation, drawing a parallel between her artistic perseverance and the sacrifices of India’s freedom fighters. Following her address, the Shrine community honoured her for her remarkable achievement. Fr Stifan Perera, Director of the Shrine, read the Letter of Honour and presented her with a miraculous statue of the Infant Jesus. Rev Fr Melvin D’Cunha, Superior of St Joseph’s Monastery, draped her with a shawl, while Fr Ivan D’Souza, Editor of Naman Ballok Jezu, crowned her with the traditional Mysuru Peta. Rev Fr Gregory D’Souza completed the tribute with a bouquet of flowers. The honour extended to her mother, Mrs. Gladis Pereira, who was felicitated with flowers for her support and encouragement. A large gathering of devotees, cultural enthusiasts, and well-wishers attended the celebration, which blended national pride with artistic glory - paying homage to India’s freedom fighters while showcasing the richness of the nation’s cultural heritage.

Infant Jesus Shrine Celebrates Solemnity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel with Deep Devotion and Festal Joy
Mangalore, July 20, 2025: The Infant Jesus Shrine, Bikarnakatte, Mangaluru, resounded with hymns of devotion and thanksgiving as the faithful gathered to celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on Sunday, July 20, 2025. The day was marked by three solemn Eucharistic celebrations, honouring Mary, the Mother and Patroness of the Carmelite Order. The day began with a 7:30 a.m. Mass presided over by Rev. Fr Walter D’Souza, OCD, and was followed by the 10:00 a.m. Solemn Mass celebrated by Rev. Fr Stifan Prera, OCD, Director of the Infant Jesus Shrine. The second Mass saw the participation of family members of Carmelite religious brothers and sisters, lending a familial and festive tone to the liturgy. The homily was preached by Rev. Fr Prithesh Crasta, OCD, a newly ordained Carmelite priest and Assistant Director of Students at Asha Deepa, Madanthyar. His reflection beautifully captured the Marian spirit of the day: “If we were ever given the opportunity to beautify one person in the world, it would be our mother. In the same way, Jesus, who existed before Mary, adorned her with divine beauty from the very beginning of her life. Mary, in turn, shared her heavenly beauty with us through the scapular - her own garment of love and protection.” His message stirred deep devotion, highlighting the profound connection between Mary and her spiritual children through the scapular. The Evening Festal Mass at 5:30 p.m. was presided over by Rev. Fr Rajesh Melwyn Rosario, Rector of St Joseph’s Interdiocesan Seminary, Jeppu. The celebration was graced by several prominent clergy including: Rev. Fr Daniel Veigas, OCD, Episcopal Vicar for Religious, Diocese of Mangalore, Rev. Fr James Vas, Vicar of the City Varado, Rev. Fr Joe Tauro, OCD, newly appointed Episcopal Vicar for Religious, Diocese of Udupi, Parish priests, assistant parish priests, religious priests, and sisters from various communities. In his homily, Fr Rosario reflected on the historical and spiritual significance of the Brown Scapular: “When the Carmelite Order was on the brink of extinction, Our Lady appeared to St Simon Stock, the then Superior General, and entrusted him with the scapular - a visible and eternal sign of her protection and maternal care. Even today, the scapular remains an anchor of faith for those whose lives are tossed by the storms of doubt, suspicion, sickness, death, and loss.”

Mangaluru, July 6, 2025: In a heartwarming initiative under the banner Carmel Ignite, the Infant Jesus Shrine, Bikarnakatte, distributed scholarships to over 160 deserving and underprivileged students on Sunday, July 6, 2025. The event, held in the Shrine premises, was marked by hope, inspiration, and encouragement for young minds. Mr Michael D’Souza, NRI and philanthropist, and Mrs Geetha Judith Saldanha, popularly known as Geetha Teacher, were the chief guests for the event. Welcoming the gathering, Rev. Fr Stifan Perera, OCD, Shrine Director, remarked, “The Infant Jesus Shrine has always been a beacon of hope - not only for those who come in search of spiritual solace but also for the socio-economically disadvantaged. Through various outreach programs, the Shrine strives to uplift lives through education, healthcare, and housing assistance.” He also highlighted the social apostolate of the Carmelite Fathers in rural mission areas such as Hoovina Hadagalli (Ballari), Kadaganchi (Kalaburagi), and Jagalur (Davanagere). In his keynote address, Mr Michael D’Souza lauded the noble gesture of the Shrine and motivated the students: “Education is the greatest gift. Once a person is educated, their entire life is enlightened. No matter one’s economic background, everyone must strive for excellence. Let us never forget our Father and Mother, Mother Tongue, and Motherland. We may be born poor, but we need not remain in poverty if we make use of the opportunities available. True joy lies in giving generously.” Mrs Geetha Judith Saldanha, headmistress and former Cluster Resource Person, shared her inspirational journey of reviving the once-declining Bolar Senior Primary West School in Mangaluru. When she assumed charge, the school had only six students. Undeterred, she began visiting nearby slums and personally encouraged parents - many of whom worked in fish factories - to send their children to school. Her tireless efforts bore fruit: within just four days, enrolment surged to over 200 students, breathing new life into the 111-year-old institution.

Prison Ministry India, Mangalore Unit Holds Half-Day Recollection at Infant Jesus Shrine
June 30, 2025 - Mangaluru: Prison Ministry India, Mangalore Unit, organized a half-day recollection for its members on June 29, 2025, at the Infant Jesus Shrine, Bikarnakatte, Mangaluru. The recollection was led by Fr Jocy Siddakatte, OCD, Carmelite priest and former editor of Naman Ballok Jesu monthly magazine. In his reflection, Fr Jocy emphasized the need to be “born again,” which calls for dying to sinful and selfish attitudes and tendencies. Reflecting on the ministry itself, he stated that prison ministry is a special vocation meant for a few and not for everyone. It requires more than just financial support - it demands a generous heart willing to sacrifice time and energy. “To visit prisons, listen to the inmates’ stories, reach out to their families, and work for their welfare is a noble and challenging call,” he said. He encouraged members to break the chains of ego, misunderstandings, and pride in order to experience true Christian freedom. Following the reflection, Fr Jocy led the members in a time of Eucharistic Adoration. The Holy Mass was presided over by Rev. Fr Stifan Perera, OCD, the newly appointed Chaplain of the PMI Mangalore Unit. In his homily, given on the solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, he reflected on the lives of these two great pillars of the Church - Peter, a man of the "heart," and Paul, a man of the "head." Despite their differences, they came together to become men of the "Spirit" and of "Christ." He invited the members to follow their example by becoming people of Christ - united in mind and heart. The day began with a welcome address by Mr Donald Coutinho, Coordinator of the PMI Mangalore Unit. He extended a warm welcome to Fr Stifan Perera, OCD, the newly appointed Spiritual Director, Fr Jocy Siddakatte, OCD, the resource person, and all the members of the Unit. Mr Lawrence Crasta, Assistant Coordinator, proposed the vote of thanks, expressing special gratitude to Mr Felix Pinto for sponsoring the morning breakfast and to Ms Linet Castelino, Secretary of the Unit, for sponsoring the midday lunch.

'Lighting the Path of Hope' scholarships awarded to children of visually impaired parents
Bengaluru, May 25: A Carmelite NGO, Dhyana Jyothi Trust, stepped in to make a small but considerate impact in the lives of the children of 30 visually impaired parents that depicted a noble purpose of Love and Charity. Under the banner, 'Carmel Vision for the Future’ scholarships of approximately Rs 6 lacs were provided for 30 children on 25th May, 2025 at Maria Niketan High School hall, Bengaluru. The programme began with a prayer service. Nelly Prichardo, the coordinator, extended a warm welcome to everyone. Fr Silvestre D'Souza, the provincial of the Karnataka-Goa- Province, was the chief guest for the occasion. Fr Ivan D'Souza, director of the Dhyana Jyothi Trust, was also present. In his message, Fr Silvestre D'Souza highlighted the significant milestone of completing 11 years of service in the scholarship programme. He emphasized that providing education to children—especially those whose parents are visually impaired—is a noble Carmelite venture. Despite their blindness, these parents hold a strong desire to brighten the future of their children. Recognizing this, the Carmelite priests have undertaken this unique initiative with the generous support of donors and benefactors. Nelly Prichardo, the coordinator of ‘Carmel Vision for Future,’ shared her thoughts, saying, "The parents of these children are not only visually impaired but also financially poor. As a result, they are unable to afford their children's education. However, these children are exceptionally talented and perform very well in their studies. We believe it is our responsibility to extend a helping hand. She further explained that many of these parents suffer from total or partial blindness and struggle to earn a livelihood. While they find it extremely difficult to provide for their children’s education, the children, despite their academic excellence, lack the financial support they need. In response to this pressing need, Dhyana Jyothi—a Charitable Trust run by the Carmelite priests, which also undertakes the printing of religious and social literature—has taken up the cause. The Trust relies on the generous support of benefactors and sponsors, who serve as guiding lights, helping secure a brighter future for these deserving children."

 About St. Joseph Monastery :

The Carmelites in Karnataka: The Teresian Carmelites had established themselves in Goa and in Kerala in the seventeenth century. And since the region formerly known as the Carnatic, lies between Goa in the north and Kerala in the South, the Carmelites had inevitably to pass through Karnataka when proceeding by land from Goa to Kerala. And it is not surprising to find them residing at least on a temporary basis, in places like Bijapur, which form part of today's Karnataka. In his ‘Viaggio alle Indie Orientali’ Fr. Vincent Mary of St Catherine, has left us interesting descriptions of the beliefs, customs, feasts of the Canara of his time, and even of the scenic beauties and the cultivation and other aspects of life. But he found the Christians greatly neglected. And, on his reporting the need of the Canara Christians to the Holy See, Mangalore secured its first Vicar Apostolic in 1677. 8 read more
